Need to fit this draft to a word limit?
Use the Essay Word Budget Calculator to split a fixed assignment word target across the introduction, body sections and conclusion.
Word, character, paragraph and line counts answer different limits
Lynara counts detected word tokens deterministically in the browser, but another editor may handle hyphenated compounds, symbols, URLs or unusual punctuation differently. When an assignment or publisher enforces a strict word limit, the submission system or required word processor is the final reference.
Character counts are useful for forms and abstracts, while paragraph and line counts help inspect structure rather than length alone. Lynara treats paragraphs as non-empty text blocks separated by blank lines and reports both characters with whitespace and characters with all whitespace removed.
All of these counts run locally on the pasted text. The tool does not need to send the draft to an AI service just to measure its length.
Privacy: calculator inputs are processed in your browser; Lynara does not need to upload these values to calculate the result.
Formula
word count = detected word tokens; character counts use entered text length with or without whitespace
Why word totals and character totals can disagree in different ways
- Type the exact sentence “Re-read the draft.” Under Lynara’s stated hyphen rule it contains 3 word tokens, 18 characters including spaces and 16 characters excluding whitespace.
- Replace the hyphen with a space: “Re read the draft.” The displayed text still has 18 characters, but now contains 4 word tokens and 15 non-whitespace characters.
- Neither change affects the fact that there is one sentence-ending period. The extra word is caused by token boundaries, not by a change in the overall character length.
What the result tells you
An editor can report a different word total for hyphenated expressions even when the character total is identical. Check both metrics against the limit that applies to your assignment.
Before you use the result
Different word processors and submission systems handle hyphens, apostrophes, URLs and Unicode punctuation differently. For strict limits, the institution’s required counter is authoritative.

Questions
Does Lynara upload my text to count it?
No. All counting runs locally in the browser.
Can I track an assignment word-count range?
Yes. Enter an optional minimum and/or maximum; the counter updates as you type and reports how many words remain or exceed the limit. Your writing is never uploaded.
How are paragraphs counted?
Paragraphs are blocks of non-empty text separated by one or more blank lines. Another editor can use a different definition.
How are hyphenated words counted?
Lynara treats a hyphenated token such as re-read as one word; another editor may use a different rule.
