Reading Level Calculator
Get a transparent English readability estimate from sentence length and approximate syllables per word without sending the text to an AI service.
Privacy: calculator inputs are processed in your browser; Lynara does not need to upload these values to calculate the result.
Formula
Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015(words ÷ sentences) − 84.6(syllables ÷ words); grade estimate = 0.39(words ÷ sentences) + 11.8(syllables ÷ words) − 15.59
Readability formulas cannot score the quality of an argument
- Keep one draft and inspect its sentences, words and estimated syllables.
- Compare a revision using the same conventions, then read the passage to decide whether it is clearer. Shorter sentences can change the formula without improving the evidence.
What the result tells you
Flesch-based outputs describe surface features of English text. They can locate dense passages for review but cannot judge accuracy, logic or appropriate specialist terminology.
Before you use the result
Names, abbreviations and technical words can confuse sentence and syllable heuristics. Very short samples and non-English text can yield misleading estimates.
Useful for
- Essay readability checks
- Handout readability estimates
- Comparing draft versions
- English prose analysis
Questions
Is the grade level exact?
No. The formula is deterministic, but Lynara estimates syllables heuristically, so the grade-level result is approximate.
Can I use this for languages other than English?
No. The implemented syllable heuristic and readability formulas are intended for English text.
