What grade do I need on my final?
Use Grade needed on the final when you know your current grade, target course grade and final-exam weight. Use Course grade after the final when you want to test an expected final-exam score and see the projected overall course grade.
Two common final-grade questions, one calculator
- Grade needed on final: “I have an 82%, the final is 30%, and I want an 85%. What do I need?”
- Projected final grade: “If I score 92% on that final, what will my course grade be?”
Both workflows use the same course-grade inputs, so you can switch between a required final score and a projected course grade without re-entering the scenario.
What is the highest or lowest course grade I can still finish with?
The reachable-range panel calculates the two endpoints under the same weighted-average model: a 0% final-exam score gives the lower endpoint and a 100% final-exam score gives the upper endpoint. This makes an unreachable target visible without guessing about curves, extra credit or dropped assignments.

required final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Can your target still be reached after the final exam?
- Suppose the current grade for all non-final work is 78% and the final exam carries 40% of the course. The non-final contribution is 78 × 0.60 = 46.8 percentage points.
- To finish with 85%, the final must contribute 85 − 46.8 = 38.2 points. Divide by its 0.40 weight: the required exam score is 95.5%.
- A perfect 100% final would finish the course at 46.8 + 40 = 86.8%. A 90% course target would require 108% on the final and is not reachable on an ordinary 0–100% exam.
What the result tells you
A score of 95.5% is mathematically sufficient for the 85% goal, but there is only 1.8 course percentage points of headroom even with a perfect exam.

This projection assumes all non-final assessment is already represented by the 78% grade and that the syllabus applies a 40% final weight. Extra credit, grade replacement or incomplete categories can change the result.
