Weighted grade examples
A weighted grade gives more influence to categories with larger weights. If exams are 60% of a course and homework is 40%, improving the exam average changes the overall grade more.

Formula
weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)
Why two category percentages should not simply be averaged
- Suppose homework is 90% with a 40% course weight, and exams are 80% with a 60% weight.
- Their contributions are 36 and 48 percentage points, giving 84%. Weights of 4 and 6 produce the same normalized result.
What the result tells you
An ordinary average gives 85%, which answers a different question. The exam category has more influence because its share of the course is larger.
Before you use the result
A running grade can exclude unfinished categories. Use the syllabus weights and the gradebook’s actual treatment of ungraded work rather than automatically entering zero.
