Need groups or a random student picker instead?
Use Random Student Picker & Group Generator when the classroom task is selection or balanced groups rather than seat placement.
Treat a random seating chart as a draft, not a classroom recommendation
Lynara shuffles the pasted roster locally and fills the selected row-and-column grid without sending names to a seating backend. Empty seats remain visible when the physical layout has more positions than students.
The shuffle does not know about accommodations, line of sight, hearing, mobility, peer conflicts, behavior, safety or instructional goals. Review and adjust the draft before using it in a real classroom.
Privacy: calculator inputs are processed in your browser; Lynara does not need to upload these values to calculate the result.
Formula
shuffle roster locally, require rows × columns ≥ student count, then assign roster entries to seats in row-major order
Example
Paste 24 names and choose 5 rows × 6 columns; Lynara shuffles the roster into 30 seats and leaves 6 seats empty.
Useful for
- First-day random seating
- Temporary classroom seating
- Exam or review-day seat shuffles
- Draft seating plans before teacher adjustments
Questions
Are student names uploaded?
No. The roster is parsed, shuffled and arranged in the current browser session.
Does the tool optimize where students should sit?
No. It creates a random draft only. Teachers should adjust seats for accommodations, safety and classroom needs.
What happens when there are more seats than students?
The remaining grid positions are displayed as empty seats.
