How to Make Flashcards That Actually Help

Useful flashcards ask one clear question or cue and have one compact answer. Overloaded cards are difficult to retrieve and review.

Method

  1. Keep one idea per card.
  2. Prefer precise prompts over vague headings.
  3. Keep the answer short enough to check quickly.
  4. Remove cards that duplicate the same fact.

Worked example

Front: What enzyme unwinds DNA? Back: Helicase.

A paragraph describing all of replication should become several cards instead.
