Late Penalty Calculator
Compare two common late-penalty formulas while keeping the exact policy assumption visible.
Privacy: calculator inputs are processed in your browser; Lynara does not need to upload these values to calculate the result.
Formula
points method: final = score − penalty points × days; score-percent method: final = score × (1 − penalty rate × days)
Five percentage points is different from five percent of the score
- For a 90% mark submitted two days late, a 5-percentage-point daily deduction leaves 80%.
- A linear deduction of 5% of the original score per day instead removes 90 × 0.05 × 2 = 9 points, leaving 81%.
What the result tells you
The difference comes from the penalty base. Similar-looking percentage wording can describe different calculations.
Before you use the result
Compounding, grace periods, calendar-day cutoffs, maximum deductions and automatic-zero rules are separate policies. Check the wording before selecting a method.
Useful for
- Late assignment scenarios

Questions
What is the difference between percentage points and percent of score?
Subtracting 5 percentage points from 90 gives 85. Reducing 90 by 5% of the score gives 85.5; the methods diverge further over multiple days.
Can the result go below zero?
The displayed final score is floored at 0%, while the raw penalty amount remains visible in the calculation details.
