Test a curve after reviewing the class distribution
Use the Grade Curve Calculator when you want to model a transparent adjustment after checking the current class average and distribution.
Read a grade distribution as counts, percentages and pass rate
A class average can hide how scores are distributed. The same mean can come from tightly clustered results or from a wide mix of high and low scores, so Lynara keeps the median, range and population standard deviation alongside editable A–F band counts and percentages.
Pass rate is calculated from its own threshold instead of assuming the D boundary is always the institutional passing mark. This makes the page useful for descriptive classroom review without silently imposing one grading policy or turning the summary into a curve.
Privacy: calculator inputs are processed in your browser; Lynara does not need to upload these values to calculate the result.
Formula
mean = Σscores ÷ count; A–F percentages = band count ÷ class count × 100; pass rate = scores at or above pass threshold ÷ count × 100
Why the class mean, median and pass rate tell different stories
- Five students receive percentage scores of 45, 76, 78, 81 and 90. Their total is 370, so the arithmetic mean is 370 ÷ 5 = 74%.
- After sorting the five values, the middle (third) score is 78%, which is the median. The lower 45% score pulls the mean below that median.
- If the teacher sets the passing threshold to 70%, four of the five scores meet it. The pass rate is 4 ÷ 5 × 100 = 80%. The score range is 90 − 45 = 45 percentage points.
What the result tells you
A 74% mean does not mean 74% of students passed, and a 78% median is not the same as the mean. Review all three statistics and the score distribution before drawing classroom conclusions.
Before you use the result
The pass threshold and letter bands are configurable. These five fictional scores are illustrative, not evidence of assessment quality. Do not drop a low score from a report without a documented grading policy.

Questions
Does Lynara curve the grades?
No. The calculator summarizes the entered scores against editable letter bands and a pass threshold; it does not transform the scores.
Can the pass threshold differ from the D threshold?
Yes. The pass threshold is separate and only controls pass/fail counts and pass rate, so you can match the rule used by your course.
