Choose the Chicago system before entering a book
- Imagine a fictional book by Elena Martin and Daniel Park, published in 2022 by Harbor Press. You want to support a point found on page 45. First ask whether the course requires Chicago 18 Notes & Bibliography or Chicago Author-Date; they are different systems.
- In Notes & Bibliography, the bibliography entry places the year near the end, after publisher information. Notes may include a page locator, but a bibliography entry normally identifies the complete book rather than the one cited page.
- In Author-Date, the reference-list entry places the year immediately after the authors, and the in-text reference would identify both surnames, the year and the specific page: (Martin and Park 2022, 45). Verify this against the official Chicago samples before submitting.
What the result tells you
The same book metadata is arranged differently because the two Chicago systems connect the reader to sources in different ways. Selecting the wrong system is not a minor punctuation difference.
