How a New Semester Changes Cumulative GPA
A cumulative GPA is a weighted average by credits, so a short new semester changes a large existing credit history less than it changes a new student’s GPA.
Method
- Multiply current GPA by current GPA credits.
- Multiply new-term GPA by new credits.
- Add quality-point totals.
- Divide by combined credits.
Worked example
3.2 across 60 credits plus 3.8 across 15 credits gives about 3.32.
The new term raises the GPA, but prior credits still dominate.
Notes
- Use only GPA-bearing credits.
- Repeated-course policies vary.
- Official transcripts can apply special rules.
