Designing a Clear Classroom Rubric
A useful rubric describes what quality looks like in terms a student can understand and a teacher can apply consistently.
Method
- Start from learning objectives.
- Choose a small number of meaningful criteria.
- Write observable performance descriptors.
- Check weighting and language for unintended bias.
Worked example
An essay rubric may separate thesis, evidence, organization and conventions.
Each level should explain what changes in performance.
Notes
- Review generated criteria manually.
- Do not confuse behavior with academic quality unless relevant.
- Accessibility and accommodations may require adjustments.
